To encourage students to develop varied perspectives on social and cultural issues, enabling a deeper understanding of different academic disciplines' interconnections, Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT Gandhinagar) is inviting applications for admission to its postgraduate programme in Society and Culture for the academic year starting from July 2024. The postgraduate programme (Society and Culture) is interdisciplinary in nature and equips the students for a variety of roles in various fields. The deadline for MA (Society and Culture) is February 10, 2024. Students with bachelor’s degree in any discipline can apply.
Highlighting various aspects of this programme, Prof Vikrant Jain, head, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Gandhinagar, said, "Interdisciplinary knowledge and skills greatly enhance our ability to think innovatively and solve problems. The MA in Society and Culture programme encourages students to develop varied perspectives on social and cultural issues, enabling a deeper understanding of different academic disciplines' interconnections.”
The key career opportunities and research options available to MA in Society and Culture students include working with non-profit sector (NGOs, policy think-tanks), industry roles such as journalism, advertising/media, communications, writing, human resources. Academic roles such as teaching or research in ecological sciences and public policy, among others and international research opportunities.
IIT Gandhinagar provides liberal financial support as well as ‘On-Campus Employment Opportunities’ programme to its students. The Institute also encourages the MA (Society and Culture) students to present their research work at international conferences abroad and provides travel scholarships of up to Rs 60,000. The MA in Society and Culture programme provides exposure to key disciplines within the Humanities and Social Sciences, including history, cultural studies, literature, translation studies, sociology, political science and anthropology.
The programme provides students with diverse research experiences like conducting fieldwork and ethnographic research, visiting historical and archaeological sites in Gujarat, travelling across the country through the IIT Gandhinagar Explorer Fellowships, and taking advantage of the national and international academic and industrial internship opportunities, among many others. Admission to MA in Society and Culture is offered based on an entrance test and interview. The minimum criterion to apply is a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with a minimum of 55% marks (or equivalent CPI/GPA).
