Marking a significant advancement in the field of online education, the Ministry of Education’s National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) at IIT Madras has started taking applications for the forthcoming January-April 2024 semester. Individuals interested in enrolling can do so until February 19, 2024.
The NPTEL has added 30 more courses this year, and is currently providing 720 courses in Engineering, Science, Humanities, and Management. The current semester’s goal is to provide over 30 lakh students with enhanced learning opportunities. This semester courses in subjects such as research methodology for planning and architectural studies, computational genomics, structural vibration, applied statistical thermodynamics, games and information, and experimental robotics have been added.
Platforms to enrol
Prospective students can visit SWAYAM at http://swayam.gov.in/ or NPTEL’s official website at http://nptel.ac.in/ to enrol for the January 2024 semester. Although there is no cost to enrol, students may choose to pay a modest price of Rs 1,000 to sit for an optional certification exam.
“Students can learn basic robotics and do five experiments in the experimental robotics courses. Any student can join this 12-week course as they learn from basics. To join computational genomics, they should know some basics in biology and computation,” said professor Vignesh Muthuvijayan, one of the coordinators of NPTEL.
Students will get free access to the recorded videos after the admissions. They will have to pay a nominal fee to take the certificate exam. “If the college approves, students also can transfer credit from these courses to their degree programmes,” he added.
Advanced learning opportunities
NPTEL aims to provide advanced learning opportunities to more than 30 lakh learners. More than 66,000 faculty members from various educational institutes across India enrolled in NPTEL courses during 2023 as part of their faculty development programme. NPTEL has also facilitated 321 internships and placements for NPTEL toppers at IITs and other institutions last year.
NPTEL, an initiative of the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, was launched 20 years ago and for a decade it has been offering certification. Over 6.5 lakh leaners have appeared for the centre-based proctored exams. The programme offers select courses in partnership with Ansys, to enable learners to earn industry-recognised badges on completing Ansys innovation courses mapped to NPTEL’s curriculum.
