Situated 16 kilometers west of Kanpur city, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT Kanpur), is a prominent public autonomous research university. The flagship program offered by IIT Kanpur is the BTech degree, with admission granted through JEE Advanced and JoSAA Counselling. The total fee for the B.Tech program at IIT Kanpur amounts to INR 9.12 Lakhs. Due to its reputation as one of the premier engineering colleges, the BTech admission cutoff tends to be quite high, typically requiring a rank of around 250 for successful admission. Notably, IIT Kanpur is renowned for its excellent placement opportunities. Recently, an IIT Kanpur incubated startup, MLIT-18, secured government funding to advance AI and Robotics Systems in the automation and railway industries. The Startup and Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) at IIT Kanpur has also entered into a CSR agreement with Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited. Additionally, IIT Kanpur, in collaboration with Silizium Circuits, secured a grant of INR 5 crores from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology under the Chip to Startups program. Admission Process -
B.Tech. and B.S. Programs:
Admissions to these programs occur once a year in July, with candidates selected through the Joint Entrance Examination-Main (JEE-Main) and Joint Entrance Examination-Advanced (JEE-Advanced). These nationwide exams are held in April and May by CBSE and IITs, respectively. The minimum qualification to appear for JEE is passing the final 10+2 examination or its equivalent. M.Sc. (2-year) and M.Sc.-Ph.D. (Dual Degree) Programs:
Admission for these programs is conducted once a year through a national-level examination called 'Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM)'. The aim of JAM is to create a unified test for entry into various post-B.Sc. programs offered by different IITs, streamlining the admission process and ensuring quality in student admissions.
IIT Kanpur's MBA program is known for setting high standards in Business Management education. Admissions are conducted annually, requiring candidates to take the CAT examination held in December. Master of Science (MS) by Research Program:
IIT Kanpur recently introduced the "Master of Science (MS) by Research" program in various disciplines. This program emphasizes project-based and industry-sponsored research. Eligibility requires a B.Tech/BS (4-year)/M.Sc. or equivalent degree with 55% marks/5.5 CPI (on a 10-point scale) and a valid GATE score (waived for sponsored and part-time candidates). For certain disciplines, candidates with a B.Sc. (3-year) degree or equivalent with 75% marks/7.5 CPI can apply.
Admissions to M.Tech. programs are generally held twice a year, in July and December. Eligibility includes a qualifying B.Tech./B.E. or M.Sc. in the relevant area and a valid GATE score. Sponsored candidates from industries and research organizations are also eligible, even without a GATE qualification. Admission to the Ph.D. program occurs twice a year, in July and December. Eligibility requires a Master's degree in Engineering, Science, Humanities, Social Sciences, or related fields. Bachelor's degree holders in Engineering may also be considered. GATE/UGC/CSIR qualification is necessary for Science and Humanities & Social Sciences programs. Candidates are selected based on interviews assessing their aptitude and potential in their chosen area. Sponsored candidates from industries and research organizations are also welcome.
